Gro has updated the Gro Drought Index (GDI) to include continent and country-level drought data alongside the GDI’s existing state and district-level data. Each day our GDI Index, which debuted in 2020 as the world’s first high resolution global agricultural drought index, offers users fully automated, high-resolution measurements of drought risk worldwide.

As part of this GDI update, we have also integrated the most up-to-date data sources available including the newly improved version of evapotranspiration values provided by FEWS NET in its production of v5 dataset reported on here. You can view what this dataset looks like in our sample display here.

From now on, the GDI will automatically process data from the FEWS NET v5 dataset to offer users improved cloud and temperature inputs, actual evapotranspiration, evapotranspiration anomalies, and improved accuracy of coastal areas. (To preserve data continuity for Gro users, we will keep the v4 data on our platform, alongside the v5 dataset.)

Agricultural drought impacts crop production, soil degradation, and desertification, as well as lives and livelihoods. Because drought also affects crop supplies, prices, and farmer income, detecting it early can aid business planning and mitigate the many potential negative consequences of drought.

GDI users value its daily outputs as well as its ease of use. Because the GDI presents drought data  in a single, easy to read format, users do not have to do a lot of pixel level pre-computing and model building to get an early read on regional and crop-specific drought conditions. The GDI can inform climate risk hedging decisions, risk analysis and planning.

GDI can be used as a standalone indicator or incorporated into other models.

The following Gro models have been impacted by this GDI update:

The GDI is one of Gro’s many machine-learning models that use on the ground resources and 46 different satellite-based weather and environment inputs - including evapotranspiration, soil moisture, precipitation, land surface temperature and other data - to construct an easy to use climate risk indicator.
