Brazilian cotton has long lived in the long shadows of the country’s other agricultural commodities. Before Brazil’s recent political and economic turmoil, the country became the fourth largest producer of cotton lint in 2015 on surging domestic demand. Although wavering domestic demand has suppressed growth in recent years, resurgent global prices have coincided with Brazil’s planting season. With a cheap Brazilian real making exports attractive abroad, Brazilian farmers are set to plant more cotton in the near future and are already on track to export more cotton than before the economic crisis.
