We constantly find new data sources to improve Gro, our flagship platform. We’ve recently incorporated data from Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). The new data from Brazil is especially important considering the country’s role as a global agricultural power. With MDIC data, you can gain useful insights into Brazil’s vast agricultural trade.

MDIC provides monthly trade flow data for both imports and exports. The Brazilian data source provides timely insights into trade flows with data for nearly all agricultural items corresponding to the World Customs Organization’s HS codes.

Gro users can also analyze trade on a country level basis using MDIC. USDA-GATS and MDIC both provide country-to-country trade flows, but only MDIC provides select state-to-country trade flows. If you’re interested in exports from Sao Paulo or Mato Grasso to Germany or China, for example, you can see them using MDIC. For more examples of how a user can gain new insights using this state-level data, look at our latest blog entry on shifting beef imports from Sao Paulo inland.

MDIC data can also help us to better understand the global impact of Brazilian agriculture. For example, users can see how Brazilian beef and poultry exports have recovered since the meat scandal earlier in 2017.

The Brazil Federal Police led a probe, dubbed “Operation Weak Flesh” by local media, into allegations of bribery and tainted meat being mixed with fresh meat to be sold as exports. JBS and BRF, the world’s largest beef producer and world’s largest chicken producer, respectively, were at the center of the investigation. Brazilian meat exports dropped to near-zero levels after the first arrests were announced.

With port capacity expansion taking place in the north, it’ll be interesting to track monthly soybean exports from the northern states of Maranhao and Bahia compared to southern states of Parana and Sao Paulo. Fruits, vegetables, fertilizer imports, and even the sweetener alternative stevia can all be analyzed using MDIC data.

In the past few weeks, Gro used MDIC data to publish research on Brazilian chicken exports, the soybean industry’s impact on Amazon deforestation, and Brazil’s struggling sugarcane industry. Try your analysis of Brazilian agriculture using MDIC data on Gro today!
